Challenge 1: Climate-resilient and accessible playgrounds

About the Challenge

Objective: Redesign the city’s network of 467 playgrounds to transform them into spaces that are safe during extreme heat and fully accessible to everyone. València is home to more than 109,000 children under the age of 16 who rely on these spaces for play, health and social interaction.

Climate projections estimate that by 2050, the city will experience temperatures above 35°C for three consecutive months, making many of today’s playgrounds unusable for a significant part of the year.

The challenge aims to implement nature-based solutions, such as natural shade, heat-resistant materials, passive cooling systems and inclusive play equipment designed for children with physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities.
