E-PLACE HERITAGE
Interactive heritage through augmented reality and digital twins
E-Place Heritage
E-Place Heritage is a pilot project developed by the Valencia-based startup Baukunst that uses augmented reality, geolocation and digital twin technologies to create new ways of exploring, preserving and promoting València’s cultural heritage.
The initiative transforms monuments, sculptures and other heritage assets into interactive digital experiences accessible via mobile devices. By creating high-resolution three-dimensional models, anyone can explore the city’s heritage from a new perspective, accessing contextual information, virtual reconstructions and enriched digital content directly overlaid onto the physical environment.
Through Valencia’s Urban Sandbox, the project has been able to test its technology in several locations across the city, including the monument to Teodoro Llorente on Gran Via Marques del Turia and the statue of Pallas Athena on Blasco Ibañez Avenue.
How does it work?
E-Place Heritage digitises historically significant heritage assets using advanced 3D modelling techniques and creates a digital platform that integrates their corresponding digital twins.
Using a mobile device, users can:
- Access virtual reconstructions of monuments and sculptures.
- View augmented reality content overlaid onto the urban environment.
- Consult historical and cultural information associated with each heritage asset.
- Follow geolocated interactive heritage routes.
- Discover points of interest through immersive experiences.
Objectives
The project pursues several objectives aligned with digital transformation and the enhancement of cultural heritage:
- Digitally preserve cultural assets and heritage elements.
- Improve public access to historical and cultural knowledge.
- Enhance visitor experiences through immersive and interactive content.
- Promote new forms of citizen engagement with cultural heritage.
- Support research and access to three-dimensional digital repositories.
- Encourage a more sustainable, inclusive and environmentally responsible model of cultural tourism.
Expected impact
E-Place Heritage helps bring cultural heritage closer to citizens and younger generations through innovative digital tools. It also supports the digital preservation of historical assets while creating valuable resources for cultural institutions, educational centres, researchers and professionals in the heritage sector.
The initiative also strengthens the city’s tourism appeal by offering enriched cultural experiences, encouraging visitors to discover València through knowledge, innovation and sustainability.
Recognition
E-Place Heritage received the València Innovation Capital Awards in the Sustainable Tourism category, in recognition of its ability to combine technological innovation, cultural preservation and economic development.
