Description

PUREPOLIS is an initiative funded by the Horizon Europe programme that, over a three-year period, develops innovative digital and analytical tools aimed at reducing air, water, soil, and noise pollution.

Valencia participates as one of the two main pilot cities, alongside Nantes (France), focusing on the areas affected by the DANA event: La Torre, Horno de Alcedo, Castellar-Oliveral, and Albufera.

The project is funded under the Horizon Europe programme, specifically the Horizon Research and Innovation action, and will provide local administrations with tools based on scientific evidence and citizen participation to support decision-making on urban pollution, a challenge that particularly affects cities and vulnerable populations.

In addition to Valencia and Nantes as pilot cities, Berlin, Rybnik, and Augsburg will participate as follower cities to assess the transferability of the project’s results.

PUREPOLIS will use real-time data and a health risk assessment framework integrating toxicology and epidemiology. It will evaluate exposure to 35 pollutants across air, noise, water, and soil, linked to 10 critical health risks. The project will also assess the impact of zero-pollution measures and provide a toolbox of dynamic strategies supported by vulnerability and behavioural frameworks. The results will be applied in both pilot cases, Valencia and Nantes, with the aim of facilitating replication across Europe through a digital twin and policy documentation.

In Valencia, the project will improve systems for assessing population exposure to pollution, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, while promoting the adoption of innovative, smart, and zero-emission solutions by the local administration.
