- The accessible interpretation center is open to visitors from October 23 to January 10, 2027, at Plaza de la Crida
- It combines a virtual reality experience, a tactile model, and accessible resources to explore the monument
- Groups of 5 to 10 people must make a reservation in advance
“Més que unes Torres” is now open to the public—an accessible interpretation center that allows visitors to discover the history and architecture of the Torres dels Serrans through an accessible and immersive cultural experience. The project, spearheaded by València Innovation Capital in collaboration with the General Directorate for Disability, is the result of a GovTech challenge aimed at finding innovative solutions to facilitate access to cultural heritage for people with disabilities.
Located in Plaça de la Crida, across from the Torres dels Serrans, the center will remain open until January 10, 2027. During these months, the public will be able to experience this iconic monument from a different perspective, overcoming some of the physical barriers that make it difficult to visit, without the need for any alterations to the historic building, which is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Paula Llobet, the councilor for Innovation, highlighted the value of this type of initiative: “Through projects like ‘Més que unes Torres,’ we show how innovation can help address the real needs of citizens. GovTech challenges connect the government with innovative talent to develop solutions that improve public services and open up new possibilities for enjoying culture in a more accessible and inclusive way.”
Technology and Innovation in the Service of Cultural Heritage
The center offers a journey through the history of the Torres del Serrans using various resources designed to enhance the experience for a diverse audience. Among these, a virtual reality experience stands out, recreating the interior of the monument and allowing visitors to travel back in time to explore its spaces and learn about its history.
The exhibition is complemented by a 1:50-scale tactile model, subtitled audiovisual content, audio guides accessible via QR codes, and easy-to-read explanatory panels. The combination of these resources offers different ways to engage with the heritage and takes into account various needs regarding accessibility and comprehension.
The winning project of the challenge, developed by Estudio Artis, addresses the challenge of creating a cultural interpretation center without physically altering the Torres dels Serrans. In this way, the space serves as a demonstration of how technology and accessible design can help expand opportunities for cultural participation.
GovTech Challenges: A Path to Innovation Within Government
“Més que unes Torres” is part of Valencia Innovation Capital’s GovTech strategy, which promotes collaboration between the public sector and the innovation ecosystem to find solutions to specific challenges facing the city.
Through this model, public services identify needs and pose challenges that make it possible to explore new solutions through entrepreneurial innovation. In this case, the goal has been to improve tourism and cultural accessibility in order to make a historic monument more accessible to people who face barriers to visiting it through conventional means.
In addition to offering the public a new experience, the center will make it possible to evaluate how well the developed solutions work and their potential to inspire similar initiatives at other heritage sites and public agencies.
