The Vitalwise technology demonstrator, developed by the Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia (IBV), enables the monitoring of a driver’s vital signs in order to detect fatigue and stress levels while driving.
Vitalwise is a system that uses cameras to capture images from which users’ physiological signals and facial expressions are analysed. The system can also be synchronised with the vehicle’s telemetry. Its software has been trained and validated using high-precision contact sensors.
A total of 60 participants of different ages and genders took part in this pilot. Their heart rate, respiratory rate and blood oxygen saturation were monitored throughout the tests. These indicators make it possible to assess the driver’s condition, including stress levels, fatigue and emotional state.
The pilot has enabled the testing of a technology on the city’s streets that aims to improve the safety and comfort of the vehicles of the future.
