Caps for Sport
A circular economy initiative that transforms plastic bottle caps into sports equipment for Valencia's districts affected by the DANA floods.
Description
Caps for Sport is a pioneering initiative that transforms waste into valuable resources. We promote the circular economy by collecting plastic bottle caps at Mestalla Stadium, recycling them and turning them into furniture and equipment for municipal sports facilities in Horno de Alcedo, Castellar-Oliveral and La Torre, areas affected by the DANA floods. In total, the recycled caps will be used to manufacture 500 stadium seats, 12 cube stools and 6 rigid table tennis nets.
Caps for Sport is a project funded and coordinated by València Innovation Capital, with the participation of the Valencia CF, the Fundación Deportiva Municipal, and the AIMPLAS.
PROJECT PHASES
Phase 1: Collection of bottle caps
Valencia CF collects bottle caps from drinks consumed at Mestalla during the 2025/2026 season matches. The caps are deposited in dedicated recycling bins located at:
- Stadium bars and refreshment areas
- Stadium entrance turnstiles
Caps are also collected at the club’s training facilities in Paterna. Once this phase is completed, the caps are sent to AIMPLAS for recycling.
Phase 2: Recycling and transformation
AIMPLAS is responsible for:
- Sorting, shredding, and washing the caps
- Transforming the recycled material into recycled pellets ready for manufacturing
- Enhancing the material’s properties to withstand impacts, UV radiation, and harsh environmental conditions
This process ensures that the recycled material is suitable for producing durable and safe products.
Phase 3: Product manufacturing
The recycled products will be manufactured by SMEs from the industrial sector, incorporating innovation into their production processes and creating new growth opportunities.
- 🪑 500 stadium seats
- 🪣 12 cube stools
- 🏓 6 rigid table tennis nets
Phase 4: Installation of products
The Municipal Sports Foundation will install the new equipment in sports facilities located in Horno de Alcedo, Castellar-Oliveral, and La Torre, which were affected by the DANA flooding event.
Thanks to this initiative, residents of these districts of Valencia will benefit from renewed, more sustainable, and future-ready sports facilities. It is a practical example of how innovation and citizen collaboration can improve quality of life in local communities.
